The Temple of Philae

The Temple of Philae was dedicated to the goddess Isis. Isis was the wife of Osiris (God of the Afterlife) and mother of Horus.

Philae in Greek means "the end" so the Temple of Philae was the Temple of the end of Egypt meaning that it was considered the most southern point.

Construction on the Temple is thought to have started in around 380 BC during Ptolemaic times.

> In 1902 the Aswan Low Dam was completed in order to maintain a constant supply of water to Aswan. This threatened many Egyptian Landmarks including the Temple of Philae. This problem was further compounded when the Dam was heightened twice, the first time between 1907 and 1912 with the second time being between 1929 and 1934. This meant that the Temple of Philae was almost always flooded. By 1960 UNESCO decided to rescue many of these landmarks and move them to higher ground when they would not be destroyed byt the Nile. The temple was move from Philae to Agilkai, about 1/2 kilometre away where it was rebuilt and still remains today. This project took place between 1977 and 1980.
